That is the procedure but it the unit is a used one from 71-79 then the clutches are not good to begin with. The only way to know the condition is to remove them and look and mic them up. If you go that far replace them with the much better solids clutches.
Removing the clutches requires removing the carrier - which means you will have to mark the caps and deal with the shims.
I buy used diff all the time and rebuild them before they go into a car. Now is the time.

The guy is asking $300.00 and says it's in good condition. "Good condition" means it worked when it was removed. He is willing to let me remove the cover and inspect it.
Is 300 reasonable?
I bought a used 3.70 rear as a spare for my 4.11. I finally blew the 4.11 and put in the $325 dollar good condition spare I had bought. It howled from day one. I eventually rebuilt the whole thing with new gears, It is now perfect. You will not be able to really tell until you put it in unless something is obvious. You take your chances with anything used.
