200 bucks is about the most I would spend on a core. Alot of the "U-Pull-it yards sell them for $75, but you would have to pull it and the pan would likely have a poke hole in it. That makes a core( already pulled) worth $150 or so in my opinion.

Yep...it was the OEM tranny that Buick used in the Grand Sport. (err, ahh is that the model I'm thinking about?) And that was a very fast car in it's day.
Had a 700 witch was going on its 4th 3/4 clutch pack in there, and I decided it was time to try a 200 4r....so I built one up...cost me a total of 450 bux, with new converter 100 bux, and front pump 130 bux ten vane brand new...., and ~80 bux for Trans Go shift kit.....another 60 bux for the core from a core dealer here in town.....they are not worth shipping....
as for the fit in my '72 here, I had to redrill the cross support as it's about 1/2 inch longer to the mount than the holes in the support were, looked like it would fit....but NO....
anyway, I have not had time/energy to get jack done on the car this week....shame really as I would much rather been doing THAT than working....oh well....
I really think the 200r4 is the better tranny than a 700r,the best advantage is the non electric overdrive in the 200,I eas going to put a 200r in my old pro street car but with a 706 was kinda leary,so I went 4l80e.
There's a few ls1 camaros around town with 200r's running mid 8's.

What non-electric overdrive? Both 200R4 and 700R4 have electric torque converter lockup. Neither require electric to go into overdrive (4th gear).
4L60E has electric overdrive, but that is not exactly apples to apples comparison.

Speaking of that...I need to consider a torque converter for my setup, and I need to know any details about my lockup. Will I have to have a switch or rely solely it?

If you convert to FI, let the ECM/PCM lock it assuming you keep a Vehicle speed sensor.
If you don't, either get a kit from Painless, Howell, Street and Performance, etc. that locks based on vacuum and being in 4th gear OR just put a toggle switch on it and remember to lock/unlock it.

Where is that located? I have a Gen1 block to put this LT1 manifold on. Isn't the VSS the crank speed sensor? I thought that was in the LT1 block itself.
