i noticed fluid leaking from my power steering lines underneath. other than the loss of power assist, is there any risk of mechanical damage if the fluid gets too low?
also, what component is most likely leaking? how hard to replace?
thanks
The pump can burn-out from the lack of lubrication if it gets too low or goes dry. Other than the pump, nothing else. Of larger concern, Cam, is what happens to hydraulic oil when it comes into contact with hot stuff.
Ussally the hoses are first to go.Worry if they go big time , your exhaustor n headers are not to far away, with the airflow pushing the oil that way, could give you a big suprise, in basicly a plastic car :seeya
Don´t panic!!!
There is way to less oil in the pump reservoir to set the car on fire!
The surprise you talk of could only happen, if the oil is blown out at once and on the exhaust manifold - where the likelihood is against infinity that this happens.
Usually the flared fittings leak - especially when they have been loosened and tightened in any other position then.
I guess with 50 bucks for new lines the job will be done!
Always use power steering fluid! I once used ATF in mine - result: all ATF on the garage floor one morning.
I don´t know the reason for that, but I thought its worth to mention!
