Default Holley carb. guys

Hi guys,

When I removed the bottom screw on the center hung float bowls to drain the gas for the winter I found my secondary float bowl with plenty of gas but the primary side almost empty. What would cause this after about 5 days of sitting?
There are no visible signs of fuel on the manifold,it must be leaking into the engine.
This would also account for the hard starting problem.
Once started, she idles and runs great....no bogging or hesition.

1971 350 LT-1

Thanks

John

Blown power valve (not as likely to happen as some would have you think), internal gasket leak, fuel boiling after shutoff.

No expert here, but Evil Herbavore pretty well nailed it. If you were using an electric pump and giving that leaky primary bowl a few seconds to refill before startup the hard starting problem would likely disappear. Since it idles OK that pretty well rules out the blown power valve but you could very well have a leaky primary bowl gasket or be boiling the fuel as stated....

The primary float level is just below the sight hole. There is plenty of fuel in the secondary bowl so one would think boiling should not be the problem on the primary side.
The primary bowl was almost empty.....a couple of drops of fuel came out when I backed the bottom bowl screw out.

I do believe mine has this problem as well, hard starting when it sits for a while until the bowl fills. Carb was just restored buy Holley and then adjusted by Lars. So I am not sure.

If its the old style holley with the bowl vents the fuel may be evaporting through the vents if the carb has been sitting for a while.

I can understand the fuel evaporting, but not a whole bowl full and just the primary side in 5 days.
I am going to call the Holley Tech. line and see what they have to say.
I will keep you all posted.......

The Holley Tech. guy said, about all it could be is a warped main body not sealing tight against the metering block.
He recommend putting a straight edge on the body and if its warped ....file it smooth.

Looks like I get to take-off the carb again.........

Leaky gaskets at the metering block or metering plate can dribble fuel into the intake. Get the engine warm, shut it down and open the throttle fully and block it open. Look down the throttle bores and watch for fuel leaking near the base plate. Often you can see fuel puddling in the intake.

An indicator of this is hard starting unless you hold your foot to the floor while cranking.
