Default Indexing bell housing

I have heard about doing it, but I never have when reinstalling a 4 speed

I understand the reason why its done............ Could anyone explain a practical, easy, but precise way to do it?

Keisler specifically states to index the bell housing when installing thier 5 speeds, and I want to get it right

Ok, good pic. You pic makes total sense.

But in the instructions tremec includes, it states use a mag base dial indicator, place it on the flywheel or clutch, (as long as nothing will disturb or slip while checking for run out)..And here is my question: The indicator shown is not centered. Its actually on the clutch plate itself, not centered. So how in the heck can you check for run out, if the indicator itself is not centered?

The indicator is bolted to the flywheel not the clutch and it is centered. The indicator does not have to be dead nuts on center since you will be subtracting two opposing readings.

Ok, now I got it. Two opposite side readings, suctratc them, gives you run out one way or the other, so indicator base does not need to be in exact center

Here is a link to my install which shows the setup I used as well. This step is extremely important so take your time. Check your readings two or three times. Give Richard at Keisler a call with the resulting readings and he will confirm whether you are OK of whether you need to install offset dowl pins. I had to drop my bell housing a fair amount to get things in spec.
