Problems at the track yesterday

Went to Englishtown to try the bracket marathon yesterday. Well, I wasn't close to being competitive since 3 out 4 runs were horrendous. The other run, my second time trial, was a new best on the car at 13.10. The other runs each had similar problems - car runs normally till just into second gear (automatic), then the engine just dies like I let off the gas. It doesn't stall, doesn't pop. Seems to sputter a little then runs OK at part throttle since the run is wasted at that point. I opened the hood on the return road and saw gas on the intake manifold on both sides of the carb. I have a Holley mech pump that supposedly doesn't need a regulator. Could all this be caused by too much fuel pressure? Why doesn't it happen every run? It runs fine on the street. Appreciate any suggestions.
Seem to be common symptoms, with many possible causes. What kind of carb? What kind of ignition system? points? what type of coil? (checked sig, I see lars tuned Qjet - must be his fault!

Sounds like fuel starvation. Could be an old fuel pump, unable to keep up with demand, could be all that fuel on the manifold too, check fuel lines and filters for leaks.
Can we interest you in coming to Atco Raceway in South Jersey???

I had a fuel starvation problem at the track tonight also. Top of 2nd gear it would just roll over. I am hoping its just my stock mechanical pump thats wore out. I made two passes and it choked on both passes. Rolled through to 2 15.0s. About 4 mph off of where it usually is. Wasted night.
It sounds like the needle is being blown out of the seat of the carb and overflowing, thus the fuel on the manifold. You might check the fuel pressure, and even though Lars tuned your carb, there may be something physically wrong with the needle and seat or the float.

Thanks for the responses guys.
The fuel pump has about 500 miles on it (Holley mech. no regulator needed, they say) distributor is new MSD, GM type HEI.
Like GruntyPants said, seems like the needle and seat are overcome by the pump. But how does the gas end up outside the carb, on the manifold?
icanfixit - How late is Atco open this year? One more weekend for Englishtown and Island.
