how do you remove the fuel tank on a 79. i need to check my sending unit , i dont think its working correctly, is there a secret to getting the gas tank out of there from the bottom.??
i beleive the sending unit is on the bottom. My 68 was on the bottom, i think my 74 & 78 were also. No need to remove the gas tank, but you DO need to remove all the gas first.
The below is what I did on my 68 as it is still fresh in my mind, may be different for your year, but hopfully it helps a bit.
You have to start by unbolting the crossmemeber bracket that runs from side to side to the frame. (4 bolts) There should be two straps that run around the gas tank and hooks to this crossmember. you can remove the straps and unbolt this crossmemeber and drop the tank. Oh yeah, obviously the spare tire carrier has to be outa there. Not sure how the exhaust comes into play as I had already pulled mine out before I got to the gas tank. Try your best to access the sending unit without pulling all this stuff off. Although I would be curious to see if your tank sticker was still on there. Unfortunately mine wasn't.
Good luck.
Hopfully someone will chime in here with more info more specific to your vette year.
The hardest part on the 78 was disconnecting & connecting the fuel lines on the top of the tank.. It was a real pain... Change all of the lines while your there...

John got it right. Sending unit can be removed through the top without dropping the tank but those rubber hoses are stiff. Cut them and replace with proper hose type. I had an article published in Corvette Enthusiast that describes the process along with testing the sending unit. That was an October 2006 Edition. If you can't get it, I can scan it and post.
