I've got a question for those of you that are familiar with L82's. I'm looking at buying a '74. I don't have time to go look at the car and will probably have it shipped. The seller tells me that the engine is a bit noisy until it warms up. He says that is normal for the L82's.
So, are they typically a bit noisy until they warm up?
RUN!
Yes the L82 pistons are forged & a TEENYTINY bit noisier on startup than most other cars' cast pistons ... but not enough to be making excuses for it ... RUN!
Mine is a little noisy while the lifters are filling back up with oil if it has sat for a few days or so, maybe a minute or 2. Maybe if you could describe the noise a little more I could be of more help. I don't know that it's normal for L 82's in particular but I know that sbc motors with their OHV setups often have noisy lifters relative to other setups. Hope this helps.

If an engine overhaul does not scare you off then go ahead and buy it.
My L-82 had a slight noise like that. It was the rod journals on the crank worn out of round. One engine overhaul later it is running like a champ!

Mine is not. You might want to ask him to define "noisy."
