Default Hypertech PowerChip..

I have seen this product in several Corvette Catelogs and it always starts with 1981 -1985..obviously the first CCC system {computer} nationally was the 81 Corvette...my question is would this chip work on a California 1980 that had the 305 engine and I believe the same type of CCC system...other than trading the 305 for a 350 my car is original intake/Carbs..and this system controls the fuel/air ratio..timing..etd..so Im limited in what I can do powrwise without being illegal...in Cali..

Is so has anyone got this chip and is it worth it? Any benifit or is it snakeoil..?
Any insights would be appreciated..thanks Brian..

As far as I know it will work, they have 2 versions: one for 180 thermostat and a 160. Don't get the 160, there is no need for it and thats too cold. The chip alters the dwell a bit over all and timing at WOT. It may give you a little, but probly only about half what they advertise. Duals, high flow cats and good mufflers will get you there better.

Thanks for the response...I wouldnt be able to go with the highflow cats on a true dual system because oddly in Cali thats illegal...if your car came originally with one cat....If the chip gave me 10hp Id take it...not alot of options with my version 1980.

Federal law, not Cali law.

Got one in my '81. I think they really only come into their own in conjunction with other mods, though it won't hurt fitting one without many mods. Second the advice not to use a 160stat.
Something you can do for free is advance the base timing. Follow the manual's instructions, but instead of setting it at the stock 6BTDC, go for something up to about 13BTDC. I set mine to 11BTDC & noticed much better throttle response, especially at low revs. If you notice any pinging then back it off a bit.

81-82 the chip performance is minimum...The computers in the 81-82 are to slow to handle any real mods.

I'll sell you a 4 month old Hypertech chip, HYP - 11722, for $50 and you can decide for yourself. I replaced my CFI and I don't need it. Send a PM if interested.

You are correct, but the offer stands for anyone else.

Does an 80 even have a computer?

Thats what I have...minus the 305 for a 350...actually the best mod I did to improve acceleration was the bowtie 700r4..that gave it more crisp off the line..it seat of the pants noticable...plus other benefits....I was just curious about that `81 chip.....working with the same 80 computer..

The 80 does not have a computer. The 81 is the first with computer and it is a computer controlled carberator. The 82 is the first with fuel injection and a computer. This thread made me start sorting throught spare parts and I opened one of my spare computers and Guess what I found. A hyperchip thermomaster. I installed it saturday and drove the car for a while and the performance improvement was minimal but I could tell a differance in shifting and converter lock up.

Not so. As I said earlier, the 80 CA model with the 305 (LG4 "option") had a computer controlled carb. I believe it is the same carb and CCC that was used in the 81 but don't know for sure.

1980 California Vette has the same exact fuel and ignition system as all of the 1981 vettes.

The system works, but it's tricky.

Wasn't the LG4 system different to the '81 & later (in trucks, etc) CCC system? What I remember reading about it is that it's a complete pita as nobody seems to know anything about it
