Default 74 auto(350) shift linkage not working?

Ok - finally got the project running and it moved when put in drive - YEAH!!! now for the problem - we replaced the shift cable because the old wore out one buckled when shifting from drive back to park...so we bought a new cable...when shifting from drive to park, the cable just arches in the back, it does not push the shift lever all the way forward to park?
The shift lever (on the trans) does move by hand so does not appear to be binding!
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks

Could the column lock cable that runs from the trans shift lever to the column next to the firewall be bound up? Mine was. It made the shifter work hard. As soon as I disconnected it, it worked smooth and easy. Took a while to find a replacement.

HI
Thanks - no I disconected the column lock cable so that it was not an issue...the replacement cable I bought seems to have a thinner cable than the original.....I guess I am the only one with this problem!

John
just got to thinking - is there supposed to be a washer of any sort behind the shift lever (up against the trans) ? Or does anyone else know?
Thanks

I don't recall. Since mine is in the body shop, I can't check either.

You might be the only person having a problem with it now.

I'm not sure what you are referring to. On my 76, there is a bracket that attaches to the transmission pan. Is that still there?

the assembly manual shows the flange on the shifter cable housing attaches to the cable bracket with a horseshoe clip. The cable end attaches to the lever assembly with a flat washer and cotter pin. The lever assembly attaches to the tranny pivot shaft with a locknut, no washer between the lever and tranny. It says "Caution: Do not use impact wrench to torque this nut." Other than that I don't know what else to look at.

If yours is like my '69, check in the console; there is a retainer clip holding the shifter cable in place that sometimes breaks loose....this will cause the cable to bind. You will have to remove the console plate to access it.

The cable sleeve has to be attached at both ends to a solid mount or else the cable will do as you described. Then the inside cable will be forced to move the lever on the tranny.
