Default L-82?

 If i understand correctly the L-82 is an engine choice and makes 220 hp, was this the most powerful engine available? Also what were the other engine codes( I think Ive heard of an L48 and a few others) and what hp did they make?
-Thanks

If you are looking for a C3 or any Corvette for that matter, I suggest that you buy the Corvette Black Book by Mike Antonick. It lists all the years, engine codes, option codes, interior codes etc. It is really a must have if you are looking for any year Corvette.

L-82 came out in '73 with 250bhp. That engine option (L-82) ran through 80 but the bhp rating varied. Stayed at 250 until 76 when it dropped to 210. Came back up to 220 in 78, 225 in 79, and finally 230 in 80. This info came from "How to restore and modify your Corvette, 1968-82" by Richard Newton. Note: the book has some slight errors in the statistics, it has L-82 listed for 81 also but no options were available, just the stock engine (L-48)

There are numerous engine options throughout the years and it would take quite some time for me to list them all out. The "L" is just the beginning letter of the RPO code for various engines. I don't know the significance of the number following but I'm sure someone on this forum would know.

Hope I haven't confused you, you'll learn alot the more you read about the vettes. Hope you find the C3 you are looking for.

Edit: I would have to agree with Steve, the black book is an excellent book if you want to learn about what to look for.

Brandon,

It depends on what year you're talking about. The L-82 was rated 250 hp in '74, 205 hp in '75, 210 hp in '76, etc. The L-82 was the most powerful engine available in '75, for instance, but not in '74, when the big block engine was available, rated 270 hp. There were lots of other engine codes, specially in the first years of C3 production, some of them rated 430-435 hp.

I suggest you get a copy of the "Corvette Black Book", by Mike Antonick. It has all the engine options for all years and a lot more. It has the engine suffix and VIN code for each engine, which is the most useful info, if you want to check cars and verify the owner claims.

Hope this helps some...

-Pedro

Since you refer to 220 hp I assume that you are looking at a '78. In 78 the L82 was rated at 220 hp. The base engine, the L48 was rated at 185 hp for federal cars and 175 hp for Calif cars. (The L82 was not available in Calif in 78). Those were the only engines for '78.
