Default C3 Expansion Tank Connection

Folks,

Need your help. I have a 71 BB with A/C. It has the Long cylindrical expansion tank (brass). I am troubleshooting a coolant leak and want to make sure I have the Heater Hoses hooked up correctly (i.e. which one to manifold and which one to the intake).

I have either hooked something up wrong or I have a bad radiator cap... I am pushing water out the over flow. I am certain of the overflow hose connection and the radiator to expansion tank connections being correct (overflow is on the top of the neck).

Appreciate the assist.

Does the coolant come out past the cap when it is cold or hot? You may have a bad head gasket if the coolant blows past the radiator cap. How is the engine running? Good idle and performance?

You need to get an AIM if you don't have one. It will show the proper arrangement.

I THINK:

One hose goes from water pump to the expansion tank and a hose goes from the expansion tank to the heater core.

Another hose goes straight from heater core to intake.

I can check when I get home tonight. It has been a few years since I put the hoses on.

Water pump to expanson tank to core (large hose).

Intake to water shut-off valve to core (small hose).

Water shut-off valve is used with A/C cars. It is vacuum operated and is activated when you turn on the A/C.

Guys,

Thanks for the double check. The hoses are correct... I had a defective (new) cap.

It had been pushing water out from start until the level was low enough and then it would spit occasionally.

Put on a new cap, packed it full of coolant, started it up and covered the radiator to brign it to temp (210) and no leaks or push out of the over flow.

Thanks for the info on the hoses; just double checking my work.

Here are a couple of pics to show the finished product.
