I am simply trying to shim up my distributor shaft on my '79 but I don't see how it comes apart. I knocked out the horizontal pin that goes through the gear and removed some of the screws at the top but I;m not sure what is the next step. My Service Man. doesn't go into detail on this and I didn't see a Lars paper on this one...
The gear SHOULD come off -if the pin is out-but it might take a little force. A piece of wood, hammer and a little PB Blast should be all that's required.
Thanks guys, a hammer helped the gear to come off...
Should the feeler gauge go in fairly easily when measuring or it is accurate when the gauge is snugly in ?
I'm also open to advice on getting the distributor to go down the last 1/8" when installing it...

I had to play with the oil pump shaft. I turned it 1/4 turn counterclockwise and it slipped right in. Make sure the rotor lines up in the exact spot as when you took it out. You don't want to be a tooth off.
If the dist is almost down and the rotor is positioned properly all you need to do to get the sucker to engage with the oil pump is crank the motor over and she will drop right down.
