Quick question about dif. rebuilds. Is it more cost effective to purchase a rebuilt unit (assume my core is OK) or have unit rebuilt. I realize there are lots of variables, and assuming the local garage is compatant, I'm thinking about a new set of gears either 4-11 or 3-90s
I think you'll find that the 3.73 and lower use a different carrier because of the pinion gear diameter. If you have your axle rebuilt to a numerically higher gear (4.11) the carrier is different and they either use a thick ring gear or a spacer to correct it. I don't see any problem with the thicker ring, but the spacer idea gives me a little heartburn. Sort of like using a carb adapter.
I've seen a forum sponsor that does axles- you may want to get with him and see what kind of a deal you can do.
Personally, I've got a 3lb coffee can and 2 boxes full of shims- I do my own.
Pretty ball park question. If yours is rebuildable then you're better off using it. If you exchange it you'll get a general rebuild, which may or may not be what you're looking for. They run about $800 for a master kit and clutches. Add for yokes, gears, small parts not included. It won't get you a custom built unit, those run about $1,500 - again all depending on what you want to do.
You should take a look at Yukon988's post over in General. He's doing this job now and there is a link there for more info.
After looking over this info you'll be better prepared to discuss it with shops.
