Default Reverse Lights

Can anyone tell me why my reverse lights seem to be staying "on" all the time. Regardless if I'm in reverse or not the lights continuously stay lit up. Any help? Thanks.

You don't say if you have a auto or manual trans, however my first guess would be a faulty switch. Or poss. out of adjustment.

If your car is a 4 speed car there will be a switch mounted to a bracket on the side of the tranny. This switch connects to the tranny shift lever with a little piece of linkage. Make sure this linkage is still connected and working correctly. If the linkage has came disconnected the switch might be stuck in the on position keeping your reverse lights on.

these switchs also go bad & the lights stay on. Its a cheap part and an easy fix. Replaced mine & no more problems.

Default My Fault

It's a 4 spd and also it's the reverse lights not the brake lights. Is it still the same for the fix? Thanks again.

There's a @round switch mounted on a @3" piece of metal that works the back-up lights. This switch is attached to the drivers side of the tranny near the reverse lever. Running from the reverse lever to the switch is a short piece of linkage that causes an "L" shaped bracket to move on the switch. Movement of the "L" shaped piece causes the lights to go on/off. It doesn't take much movement.
At one end of the 3" piece of metal that the switch is attached to you'll find an adjustment slot which allows the switch assmy to be moved so the lights can be adjusted. Simply loosen the screw that's in the slot and you should be able to move the switch assmy so your lights are out when not in reverse and vice-versa.

Here's a pic of BU switch. To adjust it, loosen the 2 screws holding the flat bracket to the trans bracket and rotate as required. Also, make sure the wire link is still on yours.
