Before I destroy anything, I am removing my door panel, and I am not sure how the door lock **** comes off. Is there the hairpin clip that holds it on, or does it just pull off? My manual doesn't say anything about it. TIA..

There is a C clip that is holding it. see part# 481334 in the following image.
My mistake...buttons were first used in 78 with a redesign of the door panel. Other elements of 78 interior were incorporated in 77 (console) but not door panels.

The console and the stalk headlight dimmer were the only major 78-82 designs used on the 77.
