I finaly had a chance to re-torque the heads gaskets and re-set the valve lash to the hot specs. With that stuff out of the way, I figured it was time to run it through the gears. I started out at about 2000 rpm in second gear on a freeway on ramp and then burried the throttle. It pulled very hard to 5500 where I shifted into third (It still had more left, but we'll save 6000 for next time) :D Third gear pulled just as well as second. There were too many cars up ahead to try fourth or fifth, so I backed out of it. With the old cam, it had no problem reving to 5700 in the first two gears, but beyond that would take forever to rev beyond 4500-5000. I also tried a few 3/4 throttle runs(normal driving for me) :D and it seemed much more effortless to get it rev. I think this cam will keep me happy for at least a year or two. That should be just about enough time to save up $$$ for the next motor. :chevy
Chuck, Sorry I missed you on Sunday. After I left your house, I was plannig to go back home, but that onramp was just too close to your house to resist. :D Next weekend we'll try 6000rpm.
Drives61, In my experiences with fuel starvation, the symptoms resemble those of valve float or ignition problems. A very sudden and noticable loss of power and possibly some bucking and/or surging can occur. Did you have these symptoms or was your problem more subtle? I guess it is possible that this is happening to some degree and I may need to look into this further. I will post a new topic on fuel pumps and would appreciate your input.
my A/F meter went off the scale lean as the engine leveled off.
since it had new lines and a large filter, i knew it was the new, but, too small stock pump. http://community.webtv.net/MATTGRU/AFtesting
How is the idle with that cam? Does it provide enough vacume to open the headlights and to use the power brakes without fear?
:flag
The idle is much smoother than I expected. It is idling at about 14", which is a great improvement over the 9"-11" that I had with the old cam. As bad as the old cam was, the process of opening the lights and wiper door could be accelerated by giving the throttle a few quick taps. To be perfectly honest, I have not even tested the vacuum operated systems since installing the new cam, but I'm sure it is much better. I don't have power brakes, so I can't tell you how that would work other than to say that it would have been interesting with the old cam   :D
