Tires for stock ralleys.
Just bought a set of ralleys and I'll be putting tires on them soon. The tires on the car now (with an aftermarket wheel) are stock 225-70-15. One has a big egg in it, so I'll probably just take the best one and make it a spare. Was wondering if anyone has tried 255-60-15 with them and how they liked them. Or if anyone has had luck with some other size. My old wheels were only 7" and the new ones are 8", so that should make the tires look alittle beefier. I had a few comments on the old wheels that the tires looked "skinny", and want to avoid that. Also my car seems to ride rather high. I don't see anything obvious that would cause such a condition. Who's had luck lowering thier vette and what have you used? Thanks in advance!

hey steve,
I bought my vette a few months ago....it has 255/60 on it right now....
I just got two new ones put on because the guy I bought it from had the car sitting up for over a year and some belts broke in the tire. but yeah the 255/60's are fine on my car no negative effects or anything!....I'll get some pics up soon so you can see what they look like!
hope this helps!

I also have a '73 convertible and have run 255/60-15 Goodyear's for the past 18 years on it. I get one small rub on the drivers side frame rail at full turn. It's just enough to keep the head of a bolt shiney...
You might want to check the fit of the 225's in your spare tire carrier. I could not get a stock 225/70 in mine at all.
I adjusted my ride height by using the gymkhana front springs and fiberglass rear spring with 8" bolts I purchased from VB&P.

Good luck... GUSTO

255/60/R15s were available as an option on the stock ralleys from '78-on. Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s and Pirelli Scorpion P-Zero tires seem to be popular and well-respected.
We really need a sticky tire thread...it seems like we do this once a week.

There's nothing wrong with staying with the stock-sized 225 replacements. No rubbing or wandering issues that way. On my '68, I stayed with 215's and have no regrets. Plus, I avoided speedometer error.
I bolted up the 255/60-15's and ran into a few problems. First the parking cables on both sides rubbed the tires. (zip tied for now), Next problem was the passenger side muffler contacted the tire. (Loosen clamps, and persuaded the muffler to move, retightened everything) Then the rear spring was contacting tire with the 8" bolts installed (moved the nut up to where it would clear). Rear of the car is still way up in the air. So much for the easy fix. And I thought the problems would be with the front tires making contact. Oh well, go away from stock and these are the kind of things that happen.

We installed a set of 7" rallies on a 65 coupe a few months back and the spring actually rubbed on the rim... while hanging on the lift. I was sure there would be a problem. Once the car was lowered onto the wheels and rolled back and forth a few times the clearance was almost an inch.
I have 255/60-15's on my '73 and the only clearance problem I had on the rear was when I installed 10" bolts to lower it for autocrossing. This placed the spring 1" from the tire sidewall which led to some rubbing. I went back to 8" bolts and had no further problems.
Keep in mind the swing arms geometry changes radically at full droop, something you'll only see if you enter Baja...
Good luck... GUSTO
