A couple of mundane...but ever so important questions on starters....
1. Are rebuilt starters for 40.00 OK....or are then prone to failure?? I don't want to turn that key and have nothing happen!! Many years ago I went through three 351 Ford rebuilt water pumps before I got one that did not make noise...too many bolts on those.!
2. A NEW OE style starter is 190...200 can't remember exactly. Should I plan to purchase this, or purchase one of the geared high torque starters for same cost?? Do the geared starters have the same turn over RPM??
I'm not sure what $40 rebuilt starter you're refering to, but I had the original starter on a 71 that I use to own rebuilt and it worked great for 3 years until I sold the car.
A 40 dollar starter may not be the best buy you could make. It depends on the builder. Many starters and even alternators are built with cost as a cryteria due to competition from discount stores. There are also heavy duty starters using the same cases. I would suggest a local rebuilder and go see him, nix on the discount junk.
Thanks....yes, I was referring to Advance Auto Parts. The 40.00 was with core exchange ofcourse. I don't believe 40.00 could cover the remanufacture's cost and the reseller profit, with any resonable level of quality.
I got tired of buying Delco rebuilts every year due to header heat and bought a small geared starter for a late model GM V-8. It weighs a lot less, starts the car jsut fine and has made it through one year. I think it was around $100. A lot cheaper than the geared starters sold for much more.
if you can, go with a gear reduction mini-starter. smaller, lighter, stronger, tougher, better built. you'll never be sorry. summit (among others) has them fro about 150 and up. i have a powermaster mini XS. absolutely great.
You can get the mini starter clones on ebay for about 70.00. Mine works great and cranks my big block much easier than the OEM ...and it weighs way less too.
I am looking at getting a gear reduction starter.
Does anyone know how many teeth a 69 350 w\auto flywheel has?
Can anyone recommend a brand and model that would work well?
