Default '82 Issues from S.C.

I'm new to Corvettes so go easy on me. I have an '82 that needs a little TLC. Most of the items I've researched and am comfortable with (i.e. headlights, etc.) but for some others I need some advice.

First, the driveline. It has the cross-fire injection with a 4-speed automatic tranny. If I start off casually, the car seems to be anxious to shift into each gear. This gets very noticeable when it is shifting into 3rd and 4th at such low speeds and with the engine under virtually no load. Makes it seem as if it is bogging. The problem is not present if I start off a little more agressively. My tach doesn't work so I can't get a feel for the RPM's when this is happening. Is this normal? If not, what could be the culprit? I have adjusted the throttle valve cable but that hasn't completely remedied the problem. I think the tranny is a 200R4.

Second, there seems to be some play in the upper half of the steering column; around the point where it "hinges" for the tilt. Is there some adjustments that can be made in the column to remedy this?

I've heard from some others that this was one of the poorest vette models due to the fuel delivery and transmission types. If this is true, how big of a deal would it be to go to a trusty old carb with a tried-and-true TH350 or TH400? Would you recommend it? I'm not looking for a street-racer here, just a nice performing, all-american sports car!!

Any comments/suggestions are appreciated.

The tranny is a 700r4, the bogging you feel is most likely not a problem but the TCC (torque convertor clutch) kicking in. There are kits available to keep it from engaging in all but the highest gear

The sloppyness in the tilt tele columns is a very common problem, the play is in the tilt mechanism, there are a couple of screws you can tighten without taking the entire column apart that may or may not fix the problem. the only real cure is to completely disassemble the column and rebuild it.

The hearsay is just that hearsay, people who have actually owned a crossfire and do not care about neck snapping performance but like a nice cruiser will swear by it. If it wasn't for the bad weather we have here I would drive one daily. A buddy of mine has one that puts out 300RWHP and it's plenty fast for most to get into trouble with

I can't help you with the Crossfire issues but if you take off the trim panel under the steering column you will see that there is a bracket there that holds the column in place. Tighten the bolts and see if that helps the loose column problem.
