Default Should it shock

I'm in the process of replacing the intake(edelbrock 3701), carburetor(edelbrock 1400), and distributor(mallory HEI) on my 350. Everything is together, thanks to a grinder and a couple of adapters, etc. The engine cranks, which means the positioning of the distributor was pretty close. I went to adjust the timing and when I touched the distributor(engine running) I got 12volts of energy through my body. I thought you could spin the distributor with the engine running to set the timing, was I incorrect? Also, the carburetor seems to let off quite a bit of fuel/air mixture after I shut the car off, any ideas?

Most likely either the distributor cap or a plug wire is leaking. But either of those will really light you up. Get a spray bottle full of water and mist the area where you got shocked. If it's a wire or cap it will show up..

This has happened to me also. Keep your fingers on the plastic cap when turning the distributor and you should be okay.

I am upgrading an L48. I found the source of the shock. The distributor has a ground inside of it that the instructions fail to tell you to hook to the block. Still curious about the fuel/vapor mist after I shut it off.
