Default wiper door problems

The wiper door on my car is having trouble opening. It worked fine before and only now is giving me a problem. I do not think it is vacuum related as my headlights are still operating normally. I am trying to figure out if this may be an acuator, vacuum relay or other. Can anyone offer advise to diagnose the problem or experience from a similar problem?

Even though your headlights may work fine your wipers may not. Under the hood check the actuator for the wiper, thing that looks like two small pie pans sealed together. There is a rubber boot that seals the actuator rod. This may have a small tear in it. They are available from a number of catalogs. There is also a vacuum switch located under the wiper door. When the wipers go to the park position they rest on this switch to signal the door to close. This switch is also available.

Before tackling the relay and actuator, the linkage itself needs to be lubricated once in a while. Try loosening the shoulder bolts on each side, spraying some silicone lube into the joints and working it back and forth a few times.

The seal on your actuator is usually not going to go all at once. The seals begin to wear pinholes and the vacuum is lost a little at a time. If the door coming up is the problem I woyuld first check the hoses for leaks but that actuator seal is more than likely the culprit. If the door going DOWN is the problem then check the switch on the passenger side windshield wiper right at it's base, probably black plastic with a white buttom about as big around as a nickle with vacume hoses attached. When the wiper fully closes when you turn it off it will push back on this vacume switch allowing the door to close. I have had this go bad on my car also. If it is totally shot you'd be surprised how strong the vacume is if you try and push the door down.
