Default Steering column disassembly...

... or: The destruction of a perfectly good interior.

Does the entire steering column have to be removed from the car & fully disassembled to remove the cover that contains the indicator switch & ign key? Or can this part be removed by a partial disassembly of the column in situ? ('81 with tilt/tele).
TIA
Paul

Paul,
All that can be removed with the column in the car.

Mike,
thanks for the quick reply Do you know if it's a fairly simple job, or is it as fiddly & awkward as it looks?!

Paul,
Jim Shea ( I think ) has several articles on this. Think they are on 101 and are also linked from BarryK's site....

Paul,
It's not that bad of a job since you don't have to deal with the tilt mechanism. The worst part is removing and installing the lockplate. If you need to replace the upper housing you will have to completely remove the turn signal switch and then feed the wiring back down the column.

Thanks
Mike,
I'm pulling it apart so that I can paint the housing & find out why the indicator switch occasionally feels resistant to movement. This, which would explain it, is what I found:

(just the broken plastic "spider" on the footboard!).

Once I've removed the 3 phillips screws holding the indicator switch in position, will I find an electrical connector below it? All I've seen so far, after just a quick look, is a whole bunch of wires heading up into the column from the bottom.

Here are the links to walk you through the disassembly of the upper end of the C3 T&T column. Download Disassembly & Repair Paper #1 and D&R Pic #1. If you want to go further, it is much easier to work on a column that is out of the car (You can download D&R Papers and Pics #2 & #3 from the www.corvettefaq.com websight.)

Hi Jim,
thanks for the links. I've been reading your papers (which are excellent) this morning & at lunchtime I went home & got working on it. I've got to the position of having the housing loose & "just" need to pull the wires through from the indicator switch & cruise control lever to get it off the car for painting. But.... a piece of black plastic fell out when I removed it! Didn't get a chance to have a close look as I had to get back to work, but if I can't work out where it's from I'll post a pic so you (or somebody) can say what it is, or if it should even be in there!

Paul if the bit that fell out is about one inch long with a slot through the middle of it and cresent shaped at the small end,its your headlight mainbeam cam, fits between your indicator lever and your mainbeam accuvator rod.As a side note that plasic "spider" that broke. After my one broke i bought a few new ones for spares, you can have one as an early xmas gift if you like.Let me know

Hi Dell boy,
Yes, that description sounds about right. I didn't look at it in detail, but it seemed to fall out when the small cover that the tilt lever pokes through came off.
Could really do with that spider thing of years, simply so that I can get it all back together asap (before I forget how it all goes!). I refuse to take it as a gift, at least let me get you a festive pint for it
