Looking for any info on replacing our 76 Front Crossover Brakeline
(proportioning valve to right front rubber hose). Is it possible to replace
this line without first removing something else out of its way? It looks
like the very first bend, (off the proportioning valve), is going to get
caught up in the clutch lever and shaft assembly. But we are hopeful
that it's just a matter of twisting, turning, time and patience, to replace
this line. Otherwise, if we have to pull the engine or lift the body off the
frame, that is beyond us.
Re: Replacing (74-82) Front Crossover Brakeline (b&b76)
Is the brake line that you want to replace still in the car or is it missing? If you have not purchased a replacement, you should ask around and see who has had good and/or bad experiences with different products. As far as doing the work with the engine in place, it will take extra care and time, but it can be done. You might need to remove some of the accessories from the front of the engine for enough room to work. It is pretty basic, just keep test fitting and tweaking until it goes right into place. A good tubing bender would be a good idea for any needed tuning. I hope this helps.
It can be done I did it on my 77. The hardest part is undoing the line at the valve. I would suggest if your in the rust belt or the car has been . A old mechanic trick is to snip the line off close to the valve and use a socket right off the start. a line wrench is good but a socket is better. Resolve your self to the fact that the steel line is going to the garbage anyway so cut the line first. fishing the line thru the maze is not that bad as the line is got the outside spring around it so it will take a few bends without using the bending tool. Wait till you see how they ship you the line. When I did it I had the power steering pump off for other reasons. but that is the only thing. I still would have done it with it on.
I replaced it on my '69 and it was really pretty easy. Then again, I don't have power steering or power brakes. It did take a little coaxing, primarily on the passenger side coming by the a-arm and radiator. Take your time and you'll be fine.
Re: Replacing (74-82) Front Crossover Brakeline (b&b76)
I've done the the same line on my 77. It's possible with out pulling the engine. You could do it in your driveway, however, make sure the front is lifted up high so you can move around alot. Have patience. :smash:
I have already replaced the shorter left side line the other day. I did break the line close to the valve and I used a Vise-Grip 4LW Locking Wrench to remove the fitting with good results. Thanks for the support.
