Default Fall out?

It looks like the speedo on my 69 is about to shoot craps. The odometer stopped working about 200 miles ago, and now, all of a sudden, the speedo needle bounces around a little, and reads 10 to 20 mph higher than normal. So, while waiting to remove the dash and pull out the speedo, I thought I'd disconnect the cable at the 4 speed. If I do this, will anything fall out of the tranny? Or is it all retained somehow?

Nothing will fall out of the tranny. There is a small bolt that holds in the threaded piece that speedo cable screws onto....

Thanks Stick Shift. I tried to disconnect at the dash, and it's a real pita. I'm not sure if somthing can jam up in the spedo, then cause damage on the other end, so disconnect, here I come. Also, yesterday, my headlight switch developed a vacume leak when in the on position. So, definately, time to pull the lower dash.
