I am new to the forum and find it very helpful. I have a 1977 vette and am wondering if I have the original carb on it. I beleive it is but thought th 1977 came with a Rochester. My carb numbers are as follows 17057204. Also I am smelling fuel with the engine off in the garage. Carb seems damp around the gaskets but it smells as if it is coming fom inside the Carb. Thanks for the help.
You are a candidate for a carburetor rebuild. I had the same problem with my '72 and just completed the rebuild. Give it a try if you feel so inclined.
Which carb rebuild kit should I use for the Carter? Is it very complicated to rebuild this carb? I have rebuilt single and 2 barrels before so will this one be a real challenge. I dont see any fuel leaking from the carb and vapor hoses are all good and attached.

I purchased the kit from Napa / Echlin based on suggested numbers from Lars. The Napa web site can help you too. The carb kit includes all of the required gaskets, some clips, needle and seat. I also purchased the nitro-filled float and a new fuel filter.
The rebuild itself is not that hard. It takes more time to clean the carb thoroughly then to tear it down and reassemble it. I let each section soak in carb cleaner over night and used a small brush for the tight spots. I have only completed one other rebuild back in my younger days. I purchased a Quadrajet book by Doug Roe and it helped alot.
My Quadrajet is also a Carter built unit. It is identical to the Rochester.
