remote mount radio/CD player needed/recommendations
I'm putting some extra gauges in my 80 and the best location is where the radio/cassete player is.
What I'm try to do is locate a radio and single cd player to the rear compartment on the passenger side, then mount the control head or faceplate to the top of the cigarette lighter door. Has anyone done a remote mount system in their vette?

If your a non-smoker, there should be plenty of room in the ashtray area, elongating the rectangle to accomadate 3 small guages with a faceplate. The depth should also be ample. I was checking that area last night as a matter of fact.... :yesnod:

Hey DaveL82,
I've been causally researching the same issue. Wireless remotes obviously won't work. Sony does make a wired remote (see link to crutchfield) for a couple of their receivers (see additional links). A couple of things I haven't figured out about this unit. 1) Can you pwr up the unit with the remote? 2) Is there a better place to mount than on the column? Hope this helps. I haven't tried it yet as I'm not ready to upgrade the stereo just yet. (read no money, too much other stuff to do first :nonod: ). If you find any other solutions or try this one let us know. I'd be interested in your results.

Radio shack sells a CD changer that I attached to roof to the rear deck. See Corvette Central for installation instruction. The remote sensor is attached by velcro to the coin tray.
Re: remote mount radio/CD player needed/recommendations (DaveL82)
I mounted a Sony unit in the jack compartment and control it with a wired remote. I made a simple metal bracket to mount the remote to the inboard, front bolt on the passenger seat, which puts it within easy reach of the driver, but it is out of sight between the console and the seat.
To mount the head unit, I cut a baffle board out of high-density particle board so that it drops into the jack compartment and hangs on the lip. The unit is mounted vertically in the board and I also built a storage compartment in the baffle board to hold CDs/tapes. I have a drawing of it, but can't post right now since the forum Webpages are down. I can send it to you in an e-mail if you want.
The only drawback to this system is that you basically have to memorize the remote functions (but I also laminated a copy of the instructions and keep in my map pocket should I forget).
Sully - Yes, you can power up/down the unit with the remote.

Hey Tex,
Cool. I figured someone had tried that unit. I'm actually planning on mounting my amp and receiver in the jack storage space. Thanks for the for the feedback.

Dave-
I see you're in Plano - I'm in Las Colinas. If you want to get together sometime and see my setup in person, just let me know and maybe we can work something out. I will probably go to some kind of car event Sat., if nothing else, will likely make a run to Keller's.

Dave
You could mount it between 2 rear speakers & use a wireless remote. The signal can be bounced to the rear.
That's a good idea. I suppose you could probably bounce it off the mirror, if not the windshield. That might be an even better solution, since you could look back and see the read-out. Hmmm!
