I have put two output shaft seals in my th-350 this year with the second one starting to leak again. What gives? If it sounds like a bushing has gone away in the tail shaft area then can they be changed without removing the trans? There seems to be bolts holding the tail part onto the rest of trans. Thanks
Yes you can change it without removing the trans. The seal between the tail and the trans is either a paper gasket or a soft o-ring. The tail is easy to remove after supporting the trans and removing the mount support. Becareful and don't rush it and you will do fine.
Be careful removing the tailshaft seal. It's a really tight fit and the tailshaft can dent or break if you pry on the seal too hard. I got my seal out in pieces and I can't help but think it would have been nice to have a seal puller. Actually, with a seal puller, you might be able to get the seal out without removing the tailshaft, but I think in the long run it'll be easier to get the old one out and the new one in with the tailshaft sitting on a work bench. Do support the trans and don't forget to have a bucket under the tailshaft to catch fluid. I'm not sure how much will come out, since I had already removed the pan, but it will come out.
My TH350 used the hard shell rear seal and had a large O-ring for the tailshaft to trans seal. Both were available at the local Chevy dealer.
Before you tear into the tranny, I would pull the driveshaft yoke and check it. You need a smooth machined surface to get a good seal and not wear out a new seal you just installed prematurely. lou
