I think I know the answer but after several years on the Forum I value your advise. My 79 is currently black and who ever painted it didn't do that good of a job. I also don't like having to keep it all that clean. Therefore on my "to do" list this winter is paint. My best friend's father paints cars on the side and says that I don't need to worry about stripping off the old layers of paint (I don't know how many are there) and says that all I need to do is to scuff up the old paint and have at it. Problem is that I've seen several of his paint jobs and they're not much better than where I'm at now. IMO if I'm going to go thru all that much effort then I'd like to end up with something that I'd be proud of.
The question for my Forum Brothers & Sisters is scuff or strip?
Strip it down. It's a time consuming job, and is pretty messy (if done with chemical strippers), but well worth the trouble because you'll know what you have under the old paint. As has been posted numerous times "the paint is only as good as the preperation"

Your '79 body is SMC, that's not as sensitive as fiberglass when it comes to chemical stripper. I only used stripper in a few areas where I couldn't get the razor blade to bite (mostly curves, fender opening, doorjambs).
Stripping with a razor blade is easy and not as messy as stripper
It doesn't take too long either, the entire car can be done on one weekend - it took me about two weeks because I get distracted too easy
I have been researching methods of stripping my 69 Vette and have decided to have it media blasted. It should cost about $700-900. They said they can put two coats of duct tape to protect any trim or glass left on the vehicle.
