Default Speedometer Insides

Has anyone cut open a speedometer cable? The inner cable slides through a guide at each end of the outter cable or tube.. Is that guide just at the ends or is there an inner tube that runs the length of the outter tube. I still have problems with my speedo jumping and I've tried greasing the inner cable with just about everything. I seems to work fine while cold..maybe the first few miles..then it starts bouncing. I'm wondering if I have too much grease in there..if there is an inner tube.. or not enough if there isn't one. It's hard to get more grease in because of the guides at the ends but if the outter tube is hollow I'll try to fill it with grease. I would replace the whole cable but I can't see where it goes through the floor above the transmittion and since the speedo side is smaller than the tranny side I'd have to install it from bottom up..

Not sure on the 80's but on mine, the cable turns 90 degrees off the speedo, exits the firewall parallel to it and just behind the driver side valve cover, goes over the bellhousing and down the passenger side of the transmission.

On my '75 the cable goes straight off the back of the speedo (no 90 deg turn) and thru the firewall, everything else the same as SteveG75 related.

Speedo cable housing construction consists of a flexible steel tube covered with a plastic/rubber coating. Think of a spring that's compressed all the way.
If a inner cable breaks or tears or whatever, chances are it's damaged the inside metal winding of the housing. With cruise control, there are 2 housing/cable assemblies. Hope this helps...

Thanks for the replies.. I pulled the inner cable and it looks fine.. no burrs or anything. I disconnected from the trany side as well because at first I couldn't get the inner cable out from the speedo side so I know the cable is not broke.. Also, it registers so the cable is one piece but who knows if this was ever replaced... Bubba strikes again! So other than the guide piece on either end the inside is hollow. Plenty of room for greace. I've been thinking about removing the inner cable, pluging up the bottom of the cable and filling with Brake cleaner. Let it sit for a few and then flushing everything out. Do that a few times should clean out the outer cable BUT does anyone think it will do any good?
