Default 700r4 Question

Ok Im looking into getting a 700r4 to replace my turbo 400. Well I was talking with a buddy of mine and he said I need to becareful because of my cam with the overdrive tranny. My question is will a 700r4 be alright with a year one crate motor. The cam specs are as follows 218/228 @ .050 and .520 lift for in/ex. I know i will need a electric stall so would a 2200 be alright. Is the cam too big to have an overdrive transmission with a 3.08 rear gear. Sorry for such a dumb question but I know nothing about transmissions.

That is a very mild cam and motor. It might work with a 3.08. I used a manually switched lockup. Some vendors have the wiring for brake release and lockup control. They also sell the correct cross member.

I originally had a 3.55 rear gear when I first installed my 700R4. Also because of the lockup function there is really no need to run a low stall converter. So you can have the best of both worlds.

220 degrees intale (@.050") is the usual dividing line cam suppliers use when recommending a higher stall converter. I suggest you check the Comp Cams or Crane's catelogs to confirm. The 700 R4 is a good choice with a 3.08 rear end. It is similar to the 3.07 performance rear end (the highest ratio offered by GM) in the C4 Corvette with the 700R4. The low first geat in the 700R4 will combine with the 3.08 to give lively street performance.
