Is it a stock, 30 year old TH350 with no history of a rebuild?
I wouldn't give it more than 300 HP. If it's been rebuilt for strength, probably at or around 500 HP.
I have been searching around for the same thing and it seems that if it has a "mild" rebuild it is good for 275 hp, an "aggressive" rebuild will be good for 400 hp and a "race" rebuild should but it at 550 hp. I was looking into doing a TKO swap to get a stronger tranny but when I found out a rebuilt TH 350 could handle so much hp and the price is like 1/5 less, I decided that would be a better path.
I built a 350 for a guy 10 years ago that's raced every weekend- no street at all. Behind a 455 in a '67 GTO. Used the right parts, he keeps a good eye on the fluid (Dexron III).
Durango is correct- A 400 will handle a whole lot more than a 350, regardless of the parts used. But it takes 25-30 more HP to turn.
Personally, with the gas prices like they are, I'd look really, really hard at either the 200-4R or a 700-R4.
