I always thougth those plates were cool, probably because every TV show in those days took place in CA and every car had either the black/gold or dark blue/gold.
The yellow on black were used to 1970. Very few 1970 models came with them however. The DMV then switched to yellow on blue. These plates came in two styles. The early ones (and I do not know when the change took place, I believe around 73 or 74) had California spelled out approximately one inch shorter than the one that followed it.
The DMV will supposedly not allow you to put the ylw on black plates on your car. My friend however did it after showing old documentation and photos showing that his car originally came with the pair of plates that he still had in his possession.
The DMV could make a lot of money if they were to allow people to switch out their current plates to the old style.
My friend tried to get the yellow on black plates for his 63 split window..DMV (Calif) told him they do not allow that except for 1962 and older cars...so he painted his ...
According to this site 1969 was the first year of the Calif Blue Base Plate - NO BALCK & YELLOW
Question # 2 still pending. Can you license a vehicle with vintage plates bought from the general public for an era correct look?
All 69 vehicles were issued with ylw on black. I know the DMV will tell you than no 70's were issued with those but that is incorrect. I am a cop in L.A. and I have seen 70 model year vehicles with the ylw on black plates. The DMV computer shows no change of ownership and vehicle operating with no change of plates since the car was first registered.
You are not allowed to put the old ylw on black plate on your car (however I have seen the exception). However you can put the black on yellow plate on your car.
There are allowances. I forget the cut off year, but owning a Model T Ford, I have learned alot.
The plates MUST be numbers matching, the DMV will do a title search 1st, then, if it is clear, they will allow it at an extra cost. You CANNOT have more than 1 set of plates though. My neighbor went thru this for his 36 Ford, and they look cool. J
