Using Summit's Brand
Their nearest distribution center to me is in Reno, Nevada. I live in Torrance Ca. (i.e. Los Angeles, just south of the airport). If I call before noon, my part is on my doorstep later afternoon the next day. This is pretty amazing. What it also means, unfortunately, is that local speed shops can't compete with Summit. If I drive to a local speed shop, they almost certainly don't have the part I want, they have to order it, I have to drive back a few days later to pick it up. Also, if I have a "technical" question about the part, I may not be able to get an answer from a local speed shop. Summit can route your phone call to someone who can talk to you.
These are just some anecdotes. Actually, I'd like to have a local speed shop to talk on a face to face basis about the stuff I want to order. I'd be willing to pay more for the closer personal service. But its not going to happen.
My apologies for comments a little at variance with the main qustion posted here.
The local speed shops have disappeared. It's now quicker to just call Summit, ask a few technical questions, order your part, and it's at the front door two days later. Their prices can't be beat. We have some high dollar, cost is no object, body off, I can build anything projects going on here, and I enjoy reading about everyone. But I'm on a budget, and summit makes it affordable. Even the very affluent hobbyists on this forum use Summit, and I like the fact that they list part #s and links to the Summit page of the on line catalogue. I hope they are a forum sponsor. I also use the smaller Mom and Pop businesses when I can, especially the Corvette specialists. My friend owns a Porsche online parts business in LA. 99% of his sales is online and phone orders. They actually hate it when customers walk in.
The cam was a disappointment for performance, but that's probably my fault. 224 degree, 465 " lift, 114 deg LSA; it has no rush of midrange power in my 77 (4 spd- 3.36 RE) that I was hoping for. I suspect the wide LSA is killing something.
