Default Transmission Indicator

I have a 76 vette. It is an automatic.
My question is.........isn't there supposed to be some type of indicator on the console that shows what gear I'm in. It appears to me that it would have a red indicator pointing to the drive I'm in.
I guess mine is missing. Where can I get one and how hard is it to put in.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Try Zip or Mid America Design for the indicator.

Can you post a pic of what your center console does look like? You should have one.

I don't know about the 76, but my 73 doesn't have one either and there's not even any opening behind the lens that an indicator could slide through. they added one at some point, I just don't know when

The indicator might be there. If the console was taken off they may of forget to hook the pin from the shifter into the indicator.

Your car came with an indicator. I doubt if there was a car ever built without one.

Default My 76

My 76 does not have one either. I do not believe they ever had one, as when you take it apart...it just does not look like there ever was one.

Was this an odd option? I remember my neighbor, used to have a '76, and I clearly remember it having a shift indicator. Obviously a manual doesn't have one...but auto cars should have.

I've had my console apart and the only opening in the metal back piece is for the light bulb... no way for anything connected to the shifter to get behind the lens. Am I just missing something here?

I'm not trying to be a wise *** here, but does anyone really think that a car manufacturer would produce a car without a tranmission indicator as to what gear the car is in? Just think of the law suits if someone put it into reverse when thinking it was in drive and ran over a crowd of people.

Yes they would -the early years up to at least 1970 had a solid plate no lens for a light just letters and numbers--I'll do further research to see when the lens started.

I agree with that but what is being said here, I believe, is that there is no indicator at all.

Yes your right. It looks like up to 70 there was no lighted lens. From 77 and up with the new console there was a lighted pointer under the lens that followed the shifter and indicated the gear you were in.From 71 to 76 there is a lens with letters and numbers that is lighted but I cant find a part # for a pointer that follows the shifter to indicate the exact gear you are in.I have a 73 console in the garage I'll check it.I just cant remember probably because I dont look at the shifter I just feel the gear change.
EDIT-OK checked this 73 and there is no way a pointer could follow under each letter or number to indicate the exact gear you are in.There is a bulb that lights the complete dial or lens but nothing to indicate the gear.

Regardless of what anyone's intuition is ... It's a fact that GM did design & build C3 auto with NO gear indicator.

I think (please correct me if you have verifiable info) that an indicator first appeared in 1977MY.

Well, I know the '75 and '76 had the indicator. And according to Zip, the '69 had one.

Neither of my 1971MY C3 auto had/have one ... no trace of attach/mount point either ... sure it's a curiousity but never an operational problem for me.

75 does not have a pointer i own a 75 and it never had one. The only thing is the 3 raised areas on the left of the shifter that correspond with 3 2 l this is the original shifter plate in my car the only thing i did was rebuild it and paint it.

Jud does your car have a pointer that moves with the shifter and indicates the gear you are in?
