Check your ground strap at the drivers side rear attached to the frame, that's where the ground from the tank fill neck connects to. And while your at it check all your grounds.
Okay, Check the ground strap. You also have a printed circuit behind the gauge cluster that occasionally goes bad. When I disassembled my console it desintegrated. Let's see what you find, and post back.

This is why I went with some aftermarket gauges. I just didn't want to have to rely on that old circuit setup. Mine was still in OK shape and still worked (except for the clock, but that don't count) but I also wanted to add a few other gauges to the console.

At the very left rear of the frame, on the bottom, directly above the driver side muffler, you should find a black lead and a flat metal band (approx1/2"wide) screwed to the frame. If you just find an 1/8" hole, then suspect missing ground.
Last one I worked on had the ground connected to the drivers side marker mounting stud (fiberglass) which caused all kinds of goofy symtoms
My fuel gauge reads 1/8 tank high when I turn left, and 1/8 tank low when I turn right. Is this the same problem? I've been making all left turns to try to save fuel.
