I have a pair of side yokes, and I looked closely at them last night as I contemplate building a 4.56 rear end that came to me with only one side yoke.
The pair I have are slightly shorter in the splined area, and there is no groove for a ring clip...any ideas what these are? Any downside to using them?
Sounds to me that if they are shorter and are missing the groove for the clip, that these are old and worn out past the goove for the clip. It happends on these yokes... and they make hardened ends on them now so this doesn't happen.

These don't show any other signs of wear, and the ends appear as manufactured (or perhaps modified in a mchine shop), with smooth, square ends...just shorter and no ring clip groove. Also, both appear identical.

Would you like to buy say 40 more of these special yokes-sell them cheap !!!! Just kidding -but on the serious side if anyone in the forum is rebuilding these yokes I have 40+ sitting out in the garage and they are FOR SALE.
Halfmoon-measure them and compare to the one with the groove-probably about a 1/4" shorter.

You might be right that they are made for a special purpose, but from what I've seen from other worn out yokes is that smooth, square ends is exactly how they would look worn out. Even if they were made specially with no groove, they should not be shorter, and they would not have a squared edge. The edge would be tapered (if that's the right word for it).
What abrasive surface bears flush against the ends of the side yokes, to cause such extreme wear?
The single yoke has the ring groove, and about 1/4 inch of splines beyond.
It's not an abrassive surface, just a lot of pressure, friction, and movement. When the Yoke goes into the diff, the clip is what stops it from coming out... the end of the yoke goes against the spider gear pin to keep it from moving in. The end being on the spider gear pin, even though it's smooth, over time will wear the end of the yoke.
Today they make yokes with hardened ends to prevent this wear.
Yoke end to snap ring groove is .187" If there is no chamfer on the yoke end and the groove is gone they are junk. The only other ones I know of are Tom's HD C clip yokes.
Lonestar in TX buys them...but they aren`t worth much $10-$15 each ....that is until you NEED a core then they the core charge is more like $40...
