Default 69 Temp Sending Unit

I have been told on this year they used a reverse polarity sending unit and is very hard to obtain.

Does this sound correct or is this smoke and mirrors?

Its the same as every thing else. It is variable resistance.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing reverse polarity about the temperature sensor. I screws into the cylinder head and uses the engine as a ground. This is a standard temp sensor configuration. It has an internal temperature sensitive resistor and the temperature guage, acting like a ohmmeter, just measures the resistance of the sensor and reads resistance values in degrees F. instead of ohms.

On my ZZ4, I used the cylinder head thermistor threaded hole to mount the thermistor for my fans. I used a threaded hole in the intake manifold for the temperature gauge. Actually, I think I had to. The ZZ4 aluminum cylinder head thermistor threaded hole is a narrow diameter hole that the stock 68 thermistor will not screw into. The SPAL fan thermistor is a perfect fit into this aluminum ZZ4 threaded hole. I found a threaded hole in the intake manifold, near the coolant thermostat, that is compatible with the stock 68 thermistor so in it went.

Nothing "reverse polarity" about that sending unit.

110%
There's no reverse polarity issue ... but correct CALIBRATION is virtually impossible to obtain from local parts house or GM dealer or from most other sources ... so get the CORRECT one from lectric limited for under $20.

Are the guages compatible with units you can buy locally. Or are they different requiring a purchase from a specialty shop. I am asking because the vet shop has had my car for three weeks now trying to fix the temp guage, condition of sale, and I do not know if they are blowing smoke up my A** as they have said they had to purchase from back east, xmas rush, mail delay Yada, Yada.

The sending units are compitable as such, but sometimes are difficult to get calibrated. The sending unit is a simple variable resistor. To test the gauge itself, you simply unplug the wire to it and check the reading, then ground it and check again. If the gauge is good you will get full scale deflection. Then its just a matter of finding a unit that shows the correct temperature reading.

When you say finding the unit that displays the correct temperature, is this find a needle in the haystack. Or is it buying from a specialty manufacturer for this application. Being without my toy for three weeks over the holidays has been very frustrating

I have had pretty good luck with TEMPO units, sold by Auto Zone among others.

So now the dealer is telling me it is a calibration issue. He tells me there are two sending units, one for 69 -79 which doesn't work and one from 69 - 71 which will work but is back ordered.

Does any of this make sense to you guys??

Either they are blowing smoke or they are full of crap. Check out Lectric Limited web site. I have bought their sending unit for my 70 and it works great.

They may have other problems but getting a temp sending unit should not be one. If they don't have it check other vendors like Paragon or Dr. Rebuild they all get them from the same place.
