Default 69 Steering column play.

I am restoring a 69 coupe and have notice a lateral play in the column. It has both tilt and tele that works fine. I noticed it when I tried to push the car to a new spot in my shop. I was turning the wheel while pushing the wheel and door jamb to move the car forward. The column seems to tilt 45 degrees when forced. It pops right back to center but doesn't seem right. Are there any pivots on the tilt that can move out of place to make this problem happen?
I have a 69 column in my 68 vert also and it doesn't have the same play.
Any help would be appreciated.

Save Wave Dave.

Please download this paper and perform the quick tests that are outlined at the beginning of the paper. I think that we can start working from there.

Jim.
It is very refreshing to get technical info from qualified sources. I will start with paper one and let you know what I find.
Thank you and Merry Christmas.

Jim.
With the column in the straight position I have 1/8 inch play up and down measured at the horn button and when I pull side to side I have a 45 degree side/down pull to the lower left? I have no direct horizontal play but that 45 degree down pull. The steering wheel always returns to straight position with no up or right side pull from that position.
I think I need paper 2 and 3?

I am quite sure that you are going to need to pull the column (Paper #2) and then take the upper end apart (Paper #3).

Off hand you have me stumped as to how the column can allow a 45 degree tilt in one direction and not the other. There are two pivot pins (one on each side). Both must be loose and/or the support piece must be broken.

Once you get the turn signal housing (aka cover) removed. It might be useful to take some digital pictures of the column.

Be sure to download D&R Paper #2 and #3 as well as the D&R Pics #2 & #3.

Merry Christmas,
Jim
