Default 69 Battery Box

Still looking for a battery box is someone is cutting one up. Mine had a half shaft blow through it in those abuse years. The car I am working on is a 69.

Does it have to be a stock correct box? You could make your own very easily out of sheet steel or sheet aluminum, or even make your own out of fiberglass, using the other side as a template...and glassing it in yourself.

How about a pic of what is left of the box. That would help in determining what is needed to rebuild it.

There were a few guys on here who had 68 batter boxes when i was repairing mine. Not too expensive but the shipping from texas made me rethink the deal. I ended up reglassing my own out of fibgerglass matt and tinfoil. The tinfoil gave me some form which I glassed over and then just pealed the tinfoil off. Looks great but then again not absolutely perfect but i'm not goin ncrs.

You got any pictures of that work? I'm really curious in case I ever have to do that.

The fiberglass resin will release from plastic sheet. Use plywood or like material for a form with heavy plastic sheet sandwiched between. Lay -up your fiberglass over it and peel the plastic off after it becomes hard. I'd work the inside with the form outside for a better cosmetic finish. Lay-up several layers of fiberglass over another plastic sheet while working on your bench. Pick up the plastic and transfer the resin soaked fiberglass directly to the work surface. Roll it down to remove air pockets and pull off the plastic sheet after it gets hard. Use heavy plastic and not the thin stuff. The thin plastic can tear in spots when removing. It is easily removed with a grinder, I just think the heavy material works better. Wear disposable latex gloves and the job isn't so messy. Acetone will remove the resin from places you don't want it. Mark the perimeter of each piece of fiberglasss mat/cloth with a Sharpie marker to easily monitor your overlap. For strength in a battery box you might like to use mat on the finish sides with a layer of cloth in the middle. Don't overdo the resin, the strength is in the material.

What years do his parts cars span? Also, there is a place near St. Louis, MO, that Sam knows about, and they have a lot of C3s for parts too.

Matt...

The best thing to do is shoot him an email and ask him. I believe one is a chrome bumper car and there are a couple of rubber bumper cars. They each have had various pieces removed for restorations they have done in the past and are currently working on.

Thanks, and I would email him if I were looking for something...I just thought I'd ask in case you knew what years he had. No big deal...he can email if he's interested.

Guys, I was offline today but thanks so much for all of the support on this. I got an email from a guy who is sending me one for fifty bucks that came out of a 69. I will splice it in and glass it really well (dropping a battery going down the interstate would not be cool).
My chassis is complete and now I plan to have the body ready to go back on the frame in about four weeks. The tough part is going to be covering the frame (powdercoated) so that the body shop does not get overspray all over everything.

A few rolls of tape-off paper, and many, many...many rolls of painter's masking tape.

Broken....bubba did it

After reglassing.... (notice the tin-foil. I had to glass the bottom on the workbench ontop of the tin-foil and leave nonresin'd fiberglass off the sides so once the bottom dried I could resin the overhang to the sides of the battery box. Can't fiberglass upside down...ask me how I know! stupid gravity then peal the tinfoil right off..soo smooth)

After sound and heat insulation spray....

The body shop will be able to cover the underneath of the car along with all of the other openings to eliminate overspray. My engine comp and chassis were complete when I sent it to paint and the body shop kept it covered. They said it was harder to tape off the car than actually paint it since I had everything detailed already. I think the restoration needs to be done in that order to eliminate overspray and/or damage to the new body paint.

Good fiberglass work 68 NJ!

Good fiberglass work 68 NJ!
I thought about painting the body before I put it back on but there are so many opportunities to chip it up during the reinstall. Also, I want to drive it 200 miles after the install in primer (such a redneck) to allow for any stress cracks. Man your paint color is awesum! What color is that and do you have any pictures of the finished car?
