I can give an excellent recommendation for "Ed Hartnett's 4 Speeds", 610-623-9381. He's in Lansdowne, PA and that's all he does. I've rebuilt 3 Muncie's and have gotten all parts from him. He's always been available for tech. advice. Willing to talk as long as you want. He does complete rebuilds, but can supply complete rebuild kits, down to individual bolts, lock tabs, etc.

Yes, he is an OK guy. He answered a couple questions for me when I rebuilt mine. The kit I bought was from Eastwood, but the kit was actually from Ed.
when picking a rebuild kit you need to compare apples to apples, some have brass but not synchro assemblies, no cluster pin, and that front bearing from GM has more ball bearings than the ones in the cheaper kits...

We make some kits for Ecklers and Corvette Central, Auto Accesories ( Corvette America), Long Island Corvette and Paddock Parts. If you notice that Corvette Central charges more for the 63 Muncie and Saganaw kit than the regular Muncie kit. This is because they no longer purchase the T10, & common Muncie kits from us but still purchase kits from us that no one else makes. When we raised the prices, they found cheaper kits. Mid America stopped buying kits along time from us for the same reason.
A word to the wise. For 26 years I started doing kits before anyone else. I sold kits to just about every "expert" that is in this business today. The kits we sold we installed when we did do rebuilding ( which we no longer do). The problem now is that no one cares about quality ( maybe some do ), but most stock answers to questions are usually some response about who sells a product the cheapest.
If you can get a good level of support from someone you purchase something from and they stand by their product, then go for it.
Did you know for example that most cheapo kits come with no slingers, no shift dogs and springs, non oem paper gaskets, Hungarian bearings, and retainer nuts made in China that have such a loose thread fit that they just don't work?
Good builders such as Ed Hartnett, and Larry from D&L know this stuff. The guy in sales in some catalog company does not. I'm not a fan of Kajon John since he's pretty much plagerized my information about I'ding Muncies from our website. I've called and asked him to remove it and he ignores me, but that is the character of some people...
Good points Paul. I didn't know you stopped building tranny's, too bad as you were one of the best.
Guys I have used a couple of Pauls kits in the past on Muncies and St-10's they were complete and high quality. I hope they will still be available and maintain the quailty that they always had.
Paul, I face the same questions alot on steering boxes and differentials. I find the guys looking at price alone really don't understand the amount of time and higher cost of quality parts these days to build a better then average unit. I guess this can be expected if one is not in the business or into wrenching a lot on their car. I take the time to help out as many as I can, and I know you have done the same thing- answered a couple of questions I had too.
Personally I stay away from the catalog places and deal with the smaller rebuilders.
I didn't stop building, but I did stop REBUILDING. I just build and sell new stuff now. I've been manufacturing custom castings and gears for some time now ( non Corvette related) I'm just no longer set up to tear down and rebuild stuff. 2006 was a record year for new Muncie 4 speeds and with the new 5 speed in the works, my time is pretty thin right now.
