I have an aftermarket radio in my 74. Sometimes I will start the car and the volume is very low. And no matter how much I turn it up it won't come up. Then all of a sudden it will come on or if I stop the car and start it at a later time it will start working normal.
Probably the beginning of the end. These head units are pretty much disposable. New ones have great features for eq's, amp power, and other accessary plug ins.

Any thoughts?
Be a little more specific please about this aftermarket head unit. Is it a stock replica of an original style head unit or something more like the new modern CD and MP3 players that have been available for the last 10 years or so?
It could be going out, but the symptoms will be different depending on what kind of head unit it is.
It is not a stock replica of the orginal unit, I think it is a USA radio that has a digital dial. I didn't put the unit in the car. Probably not more than a few years old.
It has the ability to plug an MP3 player in or cassette.
Thanks let me know what else you need to know.
Could it be a temp issue. The reason I say this is when I drove it to work this morning it was cold. I went out at lunch and know the radio is working and I didn't do anything to the car or even move it.

Sounds like it's going bad. Can you post some pics of this head unit? Sometimes the ultra cheap units have nice features, but only last a few months due to poor craftsmanship. I would suggest replacing it with a quality unit. I can suggest a few if you give me a budget.

I need to replace mine badly. I would like to go with one where I don't have to cut the dash in my 79. I plan on spending under $300 for the receiver. It does not have to be cassette or cd as I find that I listen to the radio more than anything. Suggestions?

Not cutting your dash is gonna limit you to factory style head units. Repros, that use modern technology and old looks cost a lot...probably over your $300 budget after everything.
That $300 was just for the head unit. I've got a different budget for the speakers. I also know that not cutting the dash limits my choices, but do any fall in this category that you'd recommend?

The second one...well, is that the best replacement I can get without cutting the dash? 100 watts?
Yep...pretty much. Like I said...unless you have to stay stock...you're always better off upgrading to a new bezel and modern head unit. They have the correct single DIN bezels for your car I think, so you wouldn't have to cut...they do that for you and just ship it to you.
That second one will get you all the features of a new head unit, including a digital signal processor...without having to get a new bezel. Good find...I looked right over that one.
based solely upon these ads, I can't find a difference between the stereos besides appearance and price. What am I missing in regards to the first not having the digital signal processor?
