Default Carb Question

I have a Holley 4175 on my '70. It is about 2 years old. Sometimes, fuel drips out of the secondaries, and the car won't idle....like it is flooding out. Then, even afte ryou turn it off, you can see the fuel dripping out of the secondaries...and it is hard to restart. When this happens, black smoke comes out the pipes. It will do this for a while, then all of a sudden, it starts running right, and looking into the carb, you can see that the dripping secondaries has stopped.
Any suggestions?

First thing that comes to mind is the float level. To high it will drip.

Not a carb expert but my guess is that your needle valve is dirty in your secondary bowl. It is probably not making a good seal.

Yep, I agree with Rob. I had the EXACT same thing happening this past summer with my 4160 carb. I just took a an air compressor nozzle, stuck it in the air horn, and blew the crap out (with a quick hit). I started it and looked, there was no fuel dripping, and it has run perfectly ever since .

OK....tried the air...no luck...but.....
Tapped on the seconday bowl with the back of a screw driver, and it stopped dripping, and ran right...
Would a sticking float in the secondary bowl cause the secondaries to fill up too much, and drip? What would cause it to stick?

Yeah, I suppose it could be a stuck float. I have never had one, so I don't know what would cause it to stick. Maybe you ought to put a new needle and seat assembly in too. The one good thing about carbs is that most of the parts are cheap.

Definitely sounds like either a bad/dirty needle and seat, or a sticking float. Either one will cause the bowl to overfill and then run way rich. I would replace the needle and seat, since it's only a $5 part.

Needle and seat have a speck of dirt between them. Used to happen ot me alll the time.
I used to pull the whole needle and seat assembly out and blow it out and it worked
fine after that.

The only problem here is that I had to do it all the time, could be once it startes your
going to have the problem all the time too.

Finally bought a new carb.

Had the same problem with mine. Pulled the needle and seats found debris on the valve, cleaned, no problem since.
