Default Replacing rear spring plate with weighted spring?

The SSM traction bar fits on pre-80 Corvette only, so I am fabricating my own. (I'll post pics & details later.)

I need to remove the rear spring mounting plate so I can use it as a pattern for the base plate of the rear mount bracket. I am going to weld a HD spring mount to the plate, finish it, and bolt it where the original mounting plate was.

What I want to know is, can I remove the spring mounting plate without unweighting the spring and removing the spring pad bolts?

In other words, can I leave full weight on the spring when I remove the plate?

My thinking is that force on the spring is vertical, not horizontal (lateral), so the spring will not slide forward, backward, or sideways when I take the 3 spring mount bolts out. The weight of the car will be sufficient to prevent any movement.

What do you think? Have you ever tried this?
