Default Turbo 350 question

Does anyone know what the correct length is for the transmission dipstick tube on a 1977 Turbo 350 transmission?

Default Funny you should ask

I came on here looking for an answer to a similar, but in my case embarrassingly ignorant question.

And my honest answer is, unfortunately, no, I do not, for sure. However, I do have this link for you on a search for a new AT dipstick for my '73.

This is a 27" dipstick for a TH350. (The search showed a 27" length for a TH350, and a 24" length for a TH400, but I'm not sure if they even put them both in '73's.)

http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...artnumber=5472

My question is even more basic. I have a 1973 with AT. I can not for the life of me determine whether I have a TH350 or TH400. (Web references are either contradictory or just say "M40" or "TurboHydramatic".)

I DO know that when my dipstick broke last week -- and proving that there is a benevolent God, the little end piece fell on the floor and not in the tranny pan -- I was able to put the pieces together and measure that the dipstick should be 24" on mine.

So, before I order the 24" stick for the TH400, can anyone tell me if they even used TH350's in '73?

Thanks in advance!

don't know if only Th400's were used in 73. But an easy way to tell the difference between the 350 and 400 is the shape of the trans pan. Check out photos in the Sunnit catalog and compare to yours.

The quick answer to save searching... TH350s have a pan that is a square with a corner cut off. TH400s are not square.

It seems to me that you can use whatever length dipstick you want, the important part is how much goes into the pan i.e. how much longer the stick is than the tube. But I don't know how much is the right length. Good luck!

My transmission is definitely a Turbo 350 however it has a 24" tube and dipstick. The mounting bracket on it broke off so I ordered a new one from Zip and my dipstick didn't reach the bottom of the new tube so I thought they sent me the wrong tube. After doing a Google search I found out that most of the replacement tubes for a Turbo 350 were 27" and that Turbo 4oo's and Powerglides were 24". I guess somewhere along the way the tube and dipstick were replaced with the wrong tube.

Default TH350 it is.

OK, I looked under there and a TH350 it is.

I guess I'll go ahead and order the 24" stick that the place "says" is for a TH400 since I know that's what I had before.

Since I don't have to replace the dip stick tube, I think this should work ok. I'll just hold the new one next to the old (parts) and make sure the ADD and FILL lines are close to lining up.

It WILL be tempting to put the new chrome tube that comes with it on though....

Thanks for your help everyone.

Default or, you know, TH400

OK, I really must have OD'd on stupid pills yesterday. I had the shapes backwards in my head when I checked the pan.

It, of course, IS a TH400.
