Default Should I Use Thread Locker When Bolting Leaf Spring/Plate to Rear Diff?

I am about to obtain a fresh set of (3) bolts and lockwashers to attach the 9-leaf sport spring and plate to the underside of my new '80 aluminum Dana 44 differential. On the old diff, the threads had long since disappeared and over-sized bolts/nuts had been incorporated. The new diff that I have has the threaded holes.

Should I use thread locker on the diff threads or just rely on the locking washers? Also, what is the proper torque for the bolts? Once the spring is in, the true duals go in next and then I wire and begin the adjustment/tuning of the new 700R4. Getting excited :cheers:

Hi Ted;

Verrrry nice color...
When I put the spring back in, I used thread lock - I already was missing one bolt, and the center one broke in the hole, so I wasn't going to go around with any others loosening up.

New differential - what happened to the old one? Did you get the 3.08 differential?

Adam,

I stumbled across a NEW, never used, OEM replacement Dana 44 on ebay early this spring. Bought it for $425 + shipping. I just had it blueprinted and 3.55's installed by the local gear shop. The shop owner said that everything was new in it (I was concerned that it might be defective and wanted professional to look it over before I installed). He added the 3.55's and blueprinted/reassembled with seals for $400 (including lube and additve). Not bad. I just installed the new diff in the car this weekend. The old (3.08) differential is sitting on the floor in the garage. If you hear of anybody looking for a rebuildable core, it have one (includes the side yokes but I suspect they may be ready for hardened tips inside). The old diff needs a rebuild/reseal after 115K miles.

Guess I need to add that to the list of things to do. I saw a Dana 3.08 at a swap meet
last month... Did your new one have 3.08 gears too? What are you doing with them?

Let me know how the 3.55's feel after 3.08. I've got the lower 2.87 and someday want
to go up.
