If I were thinking of changing the gear ratio in my 78, is the ring and pionion specific to the corvette or is it the same as a gm 10 bolt or gm 8.5" ring gear?

i believe the dana 36 used in the c2-c3 does use a platform specific ring and pinion. the good news is richmond gear makes just about every gear you could buy. contact them and they can tell you the correct gear for what you want to do. then you just purchase the gear set from summit or jegs for half the price of the 'corvette tax' in most of the catalogs.
you may be able to get an even better deal through a vender like van steel who may just exchange your old, tired unit with a rebuilt one already containing the gears you want.

The Vette rear is specific and requires a set of gears for Vettes only. The stock 10 bolt GM gears will not work tha tyou are thinking about. Toms Differential has the gears as do a few others. The ywill be more $$$ because they are specific for Vettes.
