Last June My 76 Vette Was At A Paint Shop To Get Touched Up After A Complete Body Off Restore. While There The Cars Ended Up With 4 Foot Of Water Over Them. The Engine, tranny And Every Thing Else Seems Fine But Needs To Be Taken Apart And Cleaned.took The Steering Column Out And Diasembled It. Corrosion All Over. The Signal Switch ,bearings And Other Small Parts Need To Be Replaced. My Question Is,how Do I Get Lower Shaft Housing Off To Replace Lower Housing Plastic Cover?it Is Cracked. Do I Need To Take Shaft Housing Out To Do This?i Have Read That Inner Column Is Very Fragile Once The Shaft Is Out. Don't Want To Take Any Chances On Messing It Up Because A 76 Column Is Hard To Find. Thanx

Sorry to hear that about the car.
I first thought that you wanted to remove the lower column bearing (parts numbered #67, 68, 69, and 70).
Now I am thinking that the parts that you want to remove are numbered (#58, 59, and 60). Unfortunately, the shift tube #66 is a press fit to the Lock Tube Housing #58. There is/was as a special tool (J-23072) shown in the shop manuals that was developed to remove the tube and special tool (J-23073) to install the tube. I don't know where to obtain the tools. They are shown on the following download.
The problem is that the shift tube is constructed in two pieces so that it will collapse in a frontal collision. It is just about impossible to remove the shift tube without collapsing the shift tube unless you have the tools.
Thanks Big2bird! And Thanks Jim For The Input. I Guess The Only Way To Replace That Cover Is Get A Different Column . Maybe A 76 Or Some Earier Column And Switch The Steering Wheel. Will A Standard Column Work?the One I Have Now Is Tilt And Tele.lot Of Work And Money For A Piece Of Plastic. Thanks Again!
You might contact Steering Columns Galore in New York. http://www.columnsgalore.com/
They have an extensive inventory of parts and steering columns. They typically aren't cheap. Is there any insurance coverage on your car?
Don't forget, that all C3 T&T steering columns from 1969 through 1976 are identical! You have all the unique steering wheel parts from your original car. The actual steering columns are the same.
