Default Help !!, Handling Problems.

Need help making my 68 Vette Handle.

I’m currently running 10 inch tyres at Front and 12 inch tyres at rear. Through ram assisted power steering. Every time I hit a bump or undulation in the road I end up crossing into the next lane, its almost as if the vette has a mind of its own.

It’s getting to the point where it’s just plain dangerous, and physically draining to drive the vette. Any ideas ?

I understand that the tyre width is causing some of the problems, so do I just have to live with it.

Does anyone else have the same problem?

this is called bump steer and gulstrand makes a kit to fix this

are you running huge tires up on the front? That is usually the problem.
http://www.guldstrand.com/bump.htm here is were you buy the kit I think it might cost a little to ship it tho.

Having the same problem. Was told it could be loose steering lash and or alignment off due to bigger tires than before.

I spoke to suspension guy about an hour a go, he thinks it could be the Right Hand Drive conversion. sounds nasty.

I'll get it checked out asap.

I second ZD75Blue. Yes you should check your alignment, but if you have wide tires that insist on going where they are pointed, They are pointing in different directions when you hit bumps! This is all but removed with Guldstrands bump steer kit. It is a rather simple (but strong) adapter that fits between the steering arm on the wheel and the tie rod. The tie rod needs to be changed too which is included with the kit.

Poly bushings may also help considerably in firming up your suspension. Make sure you check your wheel bearings too. The car should track straight and true, bumps or not. Discovering the answers to such mysteries is part of what makes this hobby so much fun. My masochistic side is now showing

Chuck
