I Just Put A 383 Stroker In My 79 Vette, Aluminum Heads. My Mechanic Put A New Sending Unit In, And The Temp, Even When The Car Is Not Hot, Shoots Up To 240 Degrees. The Guys At Corvettes Of Dallas Said I Need A Resistor Because Of The Aluminum Heads. I Dont Know What That Is, Where It Goes, And If That Is The Problem. This Engine Is Perfect, Electric Fans, Aluminum Radiator, Aluminum Heads, Aluminum Manifold. No Way This Is Overheating. Help Please
From: In the shop most of the time,,, And it BEER TIME somewhere
If it is showing 240 right after start up, and the engine is still not warmed up, that sounds like a bad sending unit or bad gauge. The restricter takes the place of the thermastat.

Use a temp sensor from 81-82. It has 3/8" NPT threads. The sensor they installed has too little resistance.
go to radio shack and get a few 10ohm 5 watt resistors. they come i packages of two for about $1.80. run them in series with the sending unit (temporarily run a wire from the sending unit to the resistor then to the gauge wire) and see what you get. add resistors as needed to get the most accurate reading of the gauge in the 180* to 200* range. if this works just make everything permanent with proper connections.
